Become a Doctor of Medical Science at Southern Illinois University
November 5, 2020
The Southern Illinois (SIU) School of Medicine announced last month that they’ll soon be offering a new Doctor of Medical Science (DMSc) degree starting in 2021. The new degree will be offered along with SIU’s Physician Assistant program.
“The Doctor of Medical Science program will have a clinical track for physician assistants practicing clinically and an educational track for those working in PA education” states an online news brief. While there’s no mention of what passes for clinical, a Lynchburg-style curriculum is suggested with courses in leadership, health care administration, health care law, global health, and disaster medicine. There will also be a course in evidence-based research.
The new SIU DMSc will be open to all master’s level PAs. The program is 37 credit hours designed to be completed in 1 year. Tuition cost is $600 per credit hour for a total estimated cost of $22,200.
Those interested in PA education will have the opportunity to select an education-specific track.
The Master’s PA program at SIU runs 7 semesters over 26 months (totaling 90 credits). SIU awarded a Bachelor of PA studies from 1997 to 2007.
