EVMS Adds the DMSc
Eastern Virginia Medical School in Norfolk, Virginia is the next institution to add the Doctor of Medical Science (DMSc) to their lineup.
In operation since the early 1970s, Eastern Virginia Medical School (EVMS) offers the Doctor of Medicine (MD), Doctor of Health Science (DHSc), and several health-related PhD programs such as Reproductive Clinical Science, Medical and Health Professions Education, Biomedical Sciences, and Clinical Psychology.
The DMSc at EVMS
The Doctor of Medical Science “…is a two-year program designed for working physician assistants to attain the culminating degree in their profession.”
The “highly flexible, asynchronous online model” will offer two tracks: Education and Advanced Clinical Practice. PAs interested in applying to the program must have completed a Master’s degree and submit an application through GradCAS with two Letters of Reference and a personal statement.
Each track at the EVMS DMSc requires 36 credit hours, divided into six terms. Each term requires two classes for a total of 6 credit hours.

12 months of tuition in the EVMS DMSc program will cost just over $16,000, and according to their website, the DMSc is a 2-year program bringing the grand total to about $32,000. For comparison, the 18-month Surgical Assisting Certificate costs $15,000 while each year of the three-year DHSc costs an average of $13,000.
EVMS has been training PAs for over 20 years. The first DMSc classes at Eastern Virginia Medical School began in May 2022.
